A foundation can be shallow or deep, and a footing is a shallow foundation. The foundation is the structure that carries loads from the superstructure to the ground, whereas the footing is the foundation that is in contact with the ground. Foundation Walls and Footings: What Is the Difference Between a Footing and a Foundation? Unless otherwise specified, footings should be properly oriented so that the concrete masonry wall is near the footing’s center line.Īlthough the top surface of poured concrete footings should be somewhat level, it should not be troweled smooth since a slightly roughened surface improves the bond between the mortar and the concrete. Similarly, prior to laying footings, tree roots, construction debris, and ice should be removed. The earth should be removed and replaced with compacted soil, gravel, or concrete in this scenario. Unless the soil is unsuitable, weak, or soft, footings should be laid on undisturbed native soil. The frost line (applicable only in locations where winter temperatures fall below freezing the frost line is the greatest depth to which soil freezes locally) įootings are commonly cast-in-place concrete, set below the frost depth to prevent heave produced by freezing of water in the soil. The composition of the foundation wall. The depth of the trench in which the footing is placed is determined by: The width and thickness of the footing are determined by the material of the foundation wall. Other parts of foundation include Footingįootings distribute structural loads from the building to the supporting earth and are located beneath the basement, crawlspace, or stem wall. When foundation walls are not built appropriately, cracks may form, and the structure may settle.Ĭracks can form as a result of the foundation being backfilled before the concrete has reached the requisite strength or because the right number of steels was not properly positioned. Because foundation walls are likely the most significant section of the project, they should be carefully designed and built. How to Construct Foundation WallsĪ foundation wall offers structural support for the entire structure you are constructing. To keep non-water-resistant building materials out of the earth. In accordance with the construction code, install a moisture-resistant barrier to below-ground living area.To provide anchorage for the above-grade construction in order for it to withstand wind or seismic stresses. To offer sufficient resistance to shear and bending strains caused by lateral soil pressure.

Convert PDFs to other Office formats too. A concept map may have more than one central node and does not have the connotation of being random and highly visual. I prefer the term “concept” or “context” map over “mind map”. There’s no single complete package, but I’m glad that there is at least an interchange format that mostly works. I use each for a different mode of my work. iThoughts provides fast input and is terrific research tool. MindNode is beautiful, simple and easy to read. MindMeister is superb for collaboration and web access. I’m happy to use each app for their particular strength. It sure would be nice if this worked more smoothly. So, if you want the convenience of sending maps between apps, don’t use images or other attachments. It exports a format that it then refuses to open. The dissapoint is that MindMeister for iOS will only import basic file types like Freemind and not the MindManager format. Send the map to the MindMeister iOS app, which will offer to import it. Starting in MindNode for iOS, export the map. It’s just the text.īut if you export to the MindManager format, you can send it to iThoughts and all of the images are transferred too. Unfortunately images are not included with this export format. The map is transferred without issue and opens right up. Starting in MindMeister, select the map to send to MindNode or iThoughts (tap the information icon in the lower right corner):Įxport the map in Freemind format and then select either MindNode or iThoughts for iOS to open the file. It’s a nice example because it contains formatting, icons, arrows, images and boundary formatting in MindMeister. Here’s an example map from MindMeister that I generated for a recent episode of Technical Difficulties. This isn’t as ideal as MindNode working with the MindMeister API, but it still works darn well. It’s now been fixed, which allows me to (at the very least) send a map from one app to the other. Until recently there was a bug, somewhere, that prevented easily sending maps from MindMeister to MindNode. But, their collaborative features and ubiquitous access keeps me as a paying customer. 2 Unfortunately, their iOS app is not very good when compared to highly polished apps like MindNode 1 But, because I work on Windows part of the time and because MindMeister has terrific functionality for collaborating on maps, I spend a fair amount of time in their web app. If you long-press the + symbol in the themes panel you can instantly extract a theme based on your mind map style and give it a name.I use a heck of a lot of concept maps when I plan. When you’ve put in the effort of making your mind map look just like you want it, it makes sense to save it for later, or even to share it with others. Long-press the color picker to enter the precise hex value you need. While it’s very easy to pick a nice shade of blue with the sliders, there are times where you need the same shade as your company's logo. You can change the color of any element of your mind map by using the built-in color picker. However, if you long-press “Width” you can open a text field to enter the number you wish. One way to set the width is by tapping the + and – buttons in the style panel. While in Focus Mode, you can tap on any other branch to see an option to refocus to it, or you can use a long-press action to refocus instantly.Įntering a custom node width is a useful feature when you’re trying to create a unified style across several nodes. Long Press to Refocusįocus Mode lets you put a spotlight on a single thought on your mind map. In this installment of Mastering MindNode we’ll conclude our focus on long-press actions by digging deeper and showing a few other spots you can press down a bit longer. All of the gestures we saw were focused on the four icons in the inspector panel. In our last post we explored various features that can be triggered with a long-press action on iOS. Tab navigation will now be possible from a track's IO section to itss header. Made the following changes in the Arrangement View:.Fixed a bug where re-doing the addition of a Max for Live device to a track (including tracks containing Racks) after an undo action would sometimes not restore all the parameter values correctly. When a macro mapping is created in a Rack for Meld’s Oscillator Type drop-down menu, the Previous and Next Type toggles are now deactivated.Fixed a bug that prevented a preset to be displayed in the browser when the preset was saved. As a result, it is no longer possible to open the folder context menu until the folder is either renamed or the name edit is canceled. Fixed a crash that occurred when attempting to remove and rename a user folder at the same time.Extreme upward modulations of any oscillator frequency will now stop at half the sample rate.Renamed the "Modulation" page to "Matrix". Fixed a bug where Meld’s oscillator volume could not be added to the Modulation Matrix from Push 3.

But if I was able to just take the test in small chunks, I feel like I would do much better,” Pugazenthi said. “One of the hard parts for me of taking the ACT is that it’s hard for me to sit down and focus for that long. According to Pugazenthi, who has taken the ACT but will not be able to take advantage of the change, sitting down for only short periods of time will give some students a distinct advantage. Targeted preparation is not the only advantage that comes with this change, Pugazenthi says. I would need to put in less time instead of going over the entire test.” “ would make easier because I would know which section I need to improve on, so I would just have to look over those parts, instead of worrying about the entire section. So now I can just go back and fix those areas that I got wrong, which will improve my score a lot,” Oh said. “Since it changed, I don’t need to retake those sections that I did really well on. If there is an opportunity to retake only certain sections instead of the whole test, “of course I’m going to take it,” Ellie Oh, sophomore, says. “I think that it will just widen the gap of our scores of students who can afford prep in that way and students who can’t.”įor those who can afford preparation, they will be able to just focus on one section to raise it to that 34 to 36 range, and “just continue that cycle of taking the test over and over again,” Levato says. People are going to know how to play the game even further, and they’re going to know they can focus on this test and do prep only for that, increase their score just continue to take it multiple times,” Levato said. “I think it’s worsening a problem of standardized test-taking being almost like an extracurricular activity for some kids. According to Levato, the ability to retake certain sections will just encourage more preparation for the tests. One main reason why students will start doing much better is that the changes will just feed into the testing frenzy, Allison Levato, guidance counselor says. There may be consequences to this lack of variety, Pugazenthi says, including that schools are going to start preferring SAT scores, since this new change may “invalidate the ACT.” In fact, Pugazenthi also argued that “in actuality, if everyone is doing amazing then nobody is doing amazing because that’s the standard.” The way students prepare for the ACT may change as a result of the new ability to retake certain sections individually. “With the ACT, there’s not going to be that much variety of scores anymore.” Photo by Max FeldmanĪ student practices for the ACT. “I feel like they’re trying to become more modern and more innovative and this is their way of doing it, but I think in the long run, colleges are going to lose respect for the ACT because of it,” Pugazenthi said. This change will undoubtedly improve scores on individual sections but may result in unintended consequences, Simi Pugazenthi, junior, says. Officials at the ACT say that students will be able to retake each of the five parts of the exam. Students will be able to retake individual sections of the ACT starting next September, opening a renewed debate on just how standard standardized tests are. Max Feldman, Business Manager & Spotlight Editor | November 11, 2019 This class has more abilities I want to use than I have points or skill bar slots. Has several good AOEs to choose from, and decent defenses. High skill ceiling on that one which makes it fun.ĭarklite: Very fun, very high DPS. He also has a parry skill which is very fun, that cancels an enemy's attack and stuns them, IF, you use it with 1/2 second of their attack landing. But its single target, with a cool down, so it takes some skill to use, and you can miss. Usually its much less than that, but you can consistently hit multi-million point shots if your armor and crit bonuses are high enough. I've actually killed a target dummy with this guy before too. (crit, Synergies Buffs, Essentials Moonstones, level 100 etc.). My best hit ever with this was in the 26 Million Damage range. The engineer shield bash only uses the shield rating, Destroyer uses your entire armor. Good combat variety to choose from, but one major standout skill, shield bash. It was being rebuilt and is missing some skills because that rework was never finished.ĭestroyer: This guy is a machine. Main two attacks are similar in damage, but very different in AOE, with few other direct damages, mostly debuffs. But you can summon a dragon, which in a nice change from most minions is actually pretty lethal. But your netherbolts, which you start with, are extremely good, very spam-able, and never really superseded. Warlock: Good Summons, interesting spell visuals. I have not played every class added by these mods yet. Here are my thoughts on some of the classes from mods I've added to that and played. So that's the difficulty curve I'm judging classes from. I'm running Synergies, Essentials, and LAO, which I play on elite mostly. Green Motawi field tiles are combined with landscape and other decorative tiles in a seemingly random layout on this fireplace.Ĭeramic tile was also much in favor as a fireplace facing, from plain 6″ x 6″ field tiles to decorative art tiles from now-famous Arts & Crafts potteries like Grueby, Rookwood, and Batchelder. These were molded and colored to resemble tile or stone, and sometimes real tiles were inset as accents. Pressed concrete was another option, molded into panels about 1½” thick, and large enough to constitute the entire front of the fireplace. It could resemble whatever sort of stone was required, although sandstone and limestone were most prevalent. Cast stone, a molded product made from concrete and fine aggregates, often was used in place of actual stone. Split-face ashlar (rectangular cut stone with an irregular face), though a bit more formal, also was used on fireplaces. Stone, including fieldstone, river rock, cobblestone, or rubble stone, had the rustic look esteemed by bungalow designers. Set off by a spindled colonnade, this brick fireplace is surrounded by a generously sized inglenook with cushioned benches. Occasionally some use was made of glazed bricks, which were finished like pottery. In Craftsman houses, brickwork was sometimes combined with river rocks to form what is generally referred to as peanut brittle, because of its lumpy appearance. Brick also could be laid unevenly and randomly, known as eccentric brickwork. Multicolored brick patterns were referred to as tapestry brick. Flemish bond features one brick turned on end every other brick. Most people are familiar with running bond, where joints in each row are staggered by half a brick. They come in many colors and textures, and there are many ways of laying them, called bonds. Many other kinds of brick were used as well, from basic red or gold bricks, to wire-cut (textured) bricks, to bricks that were multicolored or spotted, and even decorative molded bricks.īrick sizes have been standardized for centuries at 2¼” x 3¾” x 8″. Because clinkers were organic and interesting to look at, the movement embraced them, and soon they became trendy. Before the bungalow era, clinker bricks were thrown away, making them cheap or even free, which no doubt made the eyes of many a speculative bungalow builder light up. Brick was much favored, especially clinker bricks, those that had become vitrified and misshapen by sitting too close to the fire in the brick kiln. (Photo: Linda Svendsen)Ĭhimneys were of masonry construction (brick, stone, concrete block), but the fireplace itself could be faced with a wide array of materials, including brick, stone, ceramic tile, cast stone, concrete, stucco, metal, or plaster-anything that wouldn’t burn. The firebox is home to a set of 1930s vintage gas logs. Bricks and MoreĪn arched limestone fireplace in another Memphis bungalow features a hearth of Rookwood tiles. With or without an inglenook, the fireplace usually was surrounded by some sort of built-ins-often glass-door bookcases with high windows above, but a drop-front desk on one side was fairly common as well. Frequently the fireplace was surrounded by built-in benches or settles to form an inglenook, which often had a lowered ceiling that provided a feeling of coziness and set it off from the rest of the room. Gustav Stickley was a big proponent, writing in The Craftsman, “The big hospitable fireplace is almost a necessity, for the hearthstone is always the center of true home life.”Īlmost always a feature of the living room, fireplaces also were found in dining rooms, bedrooms, dens, and basements. In Arts & Crafts homes, the fireplace took on almost religious significance, and even bungalows in warm climates were built with one. Even today, when fires are no longer needed for heating or cooking, fireplaces are routinely installed in houses. (Photo: Linda Svendsen)įire fulfills a deep and primal role in the human psyche. It’s hard to believe a previous owner had painted the entire thing red. Stunning green tile accented by riveted iron straps makes the fireplace the centerpiece of the room in this Memphis bungalow. |
